ABOUT US

From humble beginnings to where we are now.

Carol's Plant Shed is founded, owned and operated by Carol (Borella) Ebbitt. The business started with very humble beginnings. At the age of 15, Carol started selling plants off a flatbed trailer in front of her parents business. Her parents Anna & Sam Borella were the founders of Borella Nursery located at 194 Smithtown Blvd. in Nesconset, New York. They were wholesale growers supplying garden centers and landscapers with plants. They grew bedding plants, hanging baskets, shrubs, perennials and all types of bulbs for Easter.

In the spring Carol would sell their plants on Easter and Mother's Day plus weekends. She did this for years while finishing her education. In the mid 1970's Carol decided to open full time during the spring and fall seasons. She continued the seasonal business for years during which she got married and had four children. In 1986 while pregnant with her fourth child she decide to enlarge the business and grow her own plants for retails sales. This decision came easy since her parents and grandparents were in the agricultural field. The business was then moved  next door to 196 Smithtown Blvd. where it is located today, open for sales April to December. From January to April they are in the greenhouses growing the plants for the spring season.

Since the 1970's the community has grown and so has Carol's Plant Shed. They now grow 95% of the plants that are sold and have expanded into new markets, selling items for the home and garden. The garden center experienced growing pains again in 2011 when we created Carol's Market.  The Market carries honey, jams, candles, soaps, and so much more. The biggest change was the addition of baking pies. We sell pies freshly baked on premise.

During all these years Carol's Plant Shed has remained a family run business with Carol's late husband Walter and their children Christine, Denise, Cheryl and Walter helping her to achieve success.
